Rubavu

Gisenyi on Lake Kivu: Rwanda's busiest border with the DR Congo and its lakeside resort town, with a master plan to 2050 now in law.

Under way

  • Upgraded Petite and Grande Barrière border posts, cross-border markets1
  • Lakeshore promenades, public beaches and high-end lakeside development1
  • A new port at Nyamyumba for passengers and cargo on Lake Kivu1
  • Muhira industrial park for light manufacturing and agro-processing1

Rubavu has two economies side by side: trade across the border with Goma, and leisure on the lake. Its 2050 plan, now binding, invests in both: faster crossings and logistics on one side, promenades, beaches and a new port on the other.

What it means for owners and developers

  • Lakeside homes let as weekend and holiday stays from Kigali and to visitors from the region; they need hotel-level turnover.
  • Trade brings longer stays: staff of logistics firms, banks and organisations working across the border need furnished homes for months.
  • Plan for the ground and the lake: the master plan zones for floods, landslides and volcanic risk; check a plot against it before buying.
